Harvard UAMA is proud to add a new course to our College Starts Here initiative, partnering with the National Education Equity Lab to offer our juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in the Harvard University Poetry in America course. The student experience explores Hip Hop as a form of poetic expression with its roots in the formation of America's greatest city: New York. Course Overview: ENGL 194 | Poetry in America: The City from Whitman to Hip Hop Course Instructor and Senior Curriculum Writer Gillian Osborne, Ph. D, Senior Curriculum Specialist and Instructor for Poetry in America In this course, we will consider American poets whose themes, forms, and voices have given expression to visions of the city since 1850. Beginning with Walt Whitman, the great poet of nineteenthcentury New York, we will explore the diverse and ever-changing environment of the modern city—from Chicago to Washington, DC, from San Francisco to Detroit—through the eyes of such poets as Carl Sandburg, Emma Lazarus, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Langston Hughes, Marianne Moore, Frank O’Hara, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Hayden, and Robert Pinsky, as well as contemporary hip hop and spoken word artists.
