The Augeas Stables The huge stables of King
The Augeas’ Stables The huge stables of King Augeas of Elis with 3, 000 steers were not cleaned for many (about 30) years. Cleaning these stables from all dung in a single day was the fifth labor of Hercules appeared in Augeias and hiding order of Eurystheus for the feat , he offered to clean the stables in one day in exchange for a tenth of the flock. Augeas tricked the hero for his offer , but accepted the deal and put his eldest son, Phyleus as a witness. Hercules cleansed manure digging two trenches in the foundations of the stables and turning through these waters of Peneus and Alpheus to the stables. The waters of these two rivers (others only Penaeus ) dragged across the manure. After finishing the work within the specified period , Hercules asked the king remuneration , but he refused to give it , because in the meantime he had been informed that the hero actually performed the orders of Eurystheus. In the subsequent trial to resolve the dispute , the tribes filed for Hercules indicating the promise of his father. Before the announcement of the decision , the tribes and Hercules were expelled from Elis by royal decree by Augeias. The first went to the island Doulichio and the hero in town Ulna. Several years later , Hercules returned to Elis , conquered the city and killed Augeias.
