2. WHY WAS THE “TRIANGULAR TRADE” DEVELOPED? • To form a trade network revolved around the European, American, and African continents. 1. From the Americas to Europe: Production crops- Tobacco, sugar, coco, and coffee. 2. From Europe to Africa: Manufactured goods- weapons, fabrics, alcohol, etc… 3. From Africa: SLAVES

3. HOW DID THE PLANTATION SYSTEM LEAD TO THE SLAVE TRADE? • It required large numbers of workers.
4. WHAT WERE LIVING CONDITIONS LIKE FOR MOST AFRICAN SLAVES? • Harsh conditions • Lack of freedom
5. WHAT WERE THREE REACTIONS OF SLAVES TO THEIR LOSS OF FREEDOM? • 1. Attempted to keep cultural traditions alive • 2. Some turned to religion • 3. Rebellion- very rare
6. WHAT IS THE AFRICAN DIASPORA? HOW DID IT AFFECT THE WORLD? • The spread of people of African descent throughout the world, specifically the Americas and Western Europe • Spread of African culture, such as… • Music • Art • Religion • Food
7. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE MOST TRAGIC RESULT OF THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE? WHY? • The fact that millions of people were deprived of freedom • Freedom is a basic HUMAN RIGHT
EFFECTS OF THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE • Social: • Led to a lack of freedom for certain peoples in the Americas • Separated Africans from one another (Including families!) • Led to rebellions and war (U. S. Civil War)
EFFECTS OF THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE • Economic: • Enriched other parts of the world, but did NOT enrich Africa • Perhaps the best example would be the Southern United States agrarian economy prior to our Civil War
