Overview • Human behaviour is fascinating • Why do people believe what they believe? • Cult leaders are examples of the power of belief in action • They demonstrate the ability of one person to influence others • And convincing those ‘others’ (i. e. their followers) to believe • Do cult leader charts have anything in common?

What is a cult? • One person’s cult is another person’s sect, group, club or religion • So there is a subjective element to the term ‘cult’ • However, (to me) a cult takes things to another level: • Corruption • Such as: the manipulation and exploitation of other people, taken to unethical and inhumane extremes • Cults are not always the stereotypical ‘master/servant’ model … cult members often see themselves as sharing participants; equals in the ideology their leader promotes

What is a cult? • Cults attract all sorts of people, including ‘educated professionals’, many often get involved in a cult with the best intentions • Despite many diverse examples, cults (and their leaders) follow a very similar narrative or ‘story arc’ • You can find a brilliant example of this on Netflix … a documentary called ‘Holy Hell’ [show image of poster for this movie]

General themes of a cult leader • Charisma (initially charming, engaging, ‘loving’, ‘kind’, ‘caring’) • Hidden wisdom (spiritual, mystical, mysterious, messiah-like) • Ideology (‘believe me’, Revelation, the apocalypse, we are an elite) • Crisis/turning points (lead to a new understanding, life direction) • Coercion (do what I say) • Contradiction (what applies to you … doesn’t apply to me!)

General themes of a cult leader • Isolation (disconnect followers from the real world) • Sex (on my terms, all or nothing) • Fear (fear of not being ‘loved’ by your leader, of rejection) • Ego (ultimately, it’s about me) • Mostly male • ‘Dad issues’?

Astrological themes of a cult leader • One planet has significant influence in cult leader charts and lives • Yep – Neptune; significant natally, by transit, Solar Arc Direction • Particularly –natal Neptune in a major aspect to Mercury, and (to a lesser extent) the Sun • If most/all transpersonal planets aspect Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars, then the leader has a more powerful message • A Saturn aspect to Neptune natally assists in turning Neptunian fantasy/vision/desire into a workable reality

Solar Arc Directions (Two minute tutorial)

Solar Arc Directions (SADs) • SADs complement transits, progressions, etc • Frank Clifford has a great A 5 -sized booklet on Solar Arc Directions • With SADs, ALL horoscope planets and points move by an equal amount (about 1° per year); very slow – so they are ‘background’ • The actual ‘degrees per year’ will depend on the Sun’s apparent daily motion on the day of birth – software works this out • Look to aspects from SADs to natal, orb of 00°. 30’ or less (six months) • Here’s a quick demo of SADs, using my mate Barry’s chart …

Charles Manson • Born to a 15 year old mother; never knew his father • Mum went to prison when he was five • Charming, rebellious child • Reform school, petty crime, prison • He learnt a lot in prison • Released, 21 st March 1967, Manson arrived in San Francisco, certain he would one day be a famous musician

Charles Manson • Recruited a loyal group of followers to his ‘peace and love’ family • He used them to serve his own ends • Isolated his followers from society • Fed them a philosophy of exclusivity, fear, control – helped by drugs • Manson warned of a massive social uprising, aka ‘Helter Skelter’ • Which he and his ‘family’ would survive, to one day run everything
