Martyrdom AD 44, Acts 12: 1 -2 • King Herod Agrippa I in AD 44 perpetrated cruelties upon the Church, whose rapid growth enraged the Jews. • The zealous temper of James and his leading part in the Jewish Christian communities probably led King Herod to choose him as the first victim. • "He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword (Acts 12: 1 -2). • James' zeal for Jesus resulted in his being the first of the 12 apostles to be martyred.
