The ankle (tarsus) contains seven tarsal bones: - the talus, - the calcaneus, - the cuboid, - the navicular - cuneiform bones (medial, intermediate, lateral)

The talus

The heel bone (os calcaneum)

The navicular bone (os naviculare) the tuberosity of the navicular bone (tuberositas ossis navicularis)

The cuboid bone (os cuboideum) the tuberosity of the cuboid bone (tuberositas ossis cuboidei)

On the inferior surface of the base of the first metatarsal bone is a tubercle of the first metatarsal bone (tuberositas ossis metatarsalis I). The lateral surface of the base of the fifth metatarsal bone also has a tubercle (tuberositas ossis metatarsalis V)

The ankle, or talocrural joint (articulatio talocruralis) Articulationes intertarseae: The subtalar (talocalcanean) joint (articulatio subtalaris) The talocalcaneonavicular joint (articulatio talocalcaneonavicularis) The calcaneocuboid joint (articulatio calcaneocuboidea) The cuneonavicular joint (articulatio cuneonavicularis) _________________________ The transverse tarsal joint (articulatio tarsi transversa) The tarsometatarsal joints (articulationes tarsometatarseae) The intermetatarsal joints (articulationes intermetatarseae) The metatarsophalangeal joints (articulationes metatarsophalangeae) The interphalangeal joints of the toes (articulationes interphalangeae pedis)

The Ankle joint

The Ankle joint The lateral ligament of the ankle joint. 1. The anterior talofibular ligament (ligamentum talofibulare anterius). 2. The calcaneofibular ligament (ligamentum calcaneofibulare) 3. The posterior talofibular ligament (ligamentum talofibulare posterius).

The subtalar (talocalcanean) joint (articulatio subtalaris) = the posterior calcanean facet for the talus (facies articularis posterior calcanei) + the posterior calcanean facet of the talus (facies articularis calcanea posterior tali).

The transverse tarsal (articulatio tarsi transversa) joint The transverse tarsal joint (articulatio tarsi transversa) = the talocalcaneonavicular (articulatio talocalcaneonavicularis) joint + the calcaneocuboid (articulatio calcaneocuboidea) joint.

The calcaneocuboid joint (articulatio calcaneocuboidea)

The common bifurcated ligament (ligamentum bifurcatum)= the medial calcaneocuboid ligament (ligamentum calcaneocuboideum) + the lateral calcaneonavicular ligament (ligamentum calcaneonaviculare)

The tarsometatarsal joints (articulationes tarsometatarseae) + interosseous tarsometatarsal ligaments Plantar + (1) between the medial cuneiform and the first metatarsal bones; (2) between the intermediate and lateral cuneiform and the second and third metatarsal bones; (3) between the cuboid and the fourth and fifth metatarsal bones.

The metatarsophalangeal joints (articulationes metatarsophalangeae) - the plantar ligaments (ligamenta plantaria) on the plantar surface; the collateral ligaments (ligamenta collateralia) on the sides; the deep transverse ligament of the sole (ligamentum metatarsea transversa profunda) formed by the articular surfaces of the heads of the metatarsals and the bases of the proximal phalanges

The interphalangeal joints of the toes (articulationes interphalangeae pedis) - the collateral ligaments (ligamenta collateralia) on the sides; - the plantar ligaments (ligamenta plantaria) on the plantar surface.
