What is an Anecdote? • An anecdote is a brief story. Usually it adds humor, but it can also be dramatic. • An anecdote works well with a first person essay since it allows the writer to act as a narrator for the brief story. • Anecdotes are effective hooks since they can use very exciting words. • Another reason anecdotes are effective as hooks is that they often allow the reader to make a connection to the story since it may also have happened to the reader.

A Sample The little girl eagerly picked up the beautifully wrapped box. The shiny, red foil wrapping reflected the glow of the lights upon the Christmas tree. She couldn’t contain herself. She had to open that box. She’d asked Santa for her very own Cabbage Patch Doll. He must have read her letter! The foil tore, and before she knew it, the face of her new dolly was looking at her through the plastic covering of the box. Her wish had been granted! That little girl was me many years ago, and that doll was simply one of many presents that I have treasured over the years. Christmas has always been a special time for me. Another Sample I hurled the foam Steeler brick at the television! I had another one, and I threw it too.
