Part I – Family Steinberger et al
S 1 a: Family Steinberger from Hünfeld http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/huenfeld_synagoge. htm http: //www. hassiajudaica. de/Lebenswege/English/Braunschweiger_Manfred_English/index. html#titelseite. html Cemetery: Burghaun Yitzchok 1829 -1907, 16 Av Kever in Burghaun Jakob first married Mina Halberstadt in 1870 but she died shortly after childbirth Jakob then married Bina Rosskamm in 1873 Bina Hulda nee Rabenstein 19151975 Fred (Jakob) Stone Dina Joseph Steinberger Jakob Steinberger Isak Steinberger Martin (Moshe) Steinberger 19212008 Source: Joseph and Jakob’s graves are on the LAGIS website Also sourced from Grandad Martin’s Yad Vashem entry We have copies of Jakob’s wedding certificates, kindly sourced by Elisabeth S. S. Entitled Chaver We are still trying to discover where he came from He must have passed away before 1824, as his son Joseph named one of his sons to be Isak, after Joseph’s father 1787 -1868 aged 84, 16 Av Kever in Burghaun Entitled “Chaver” and was the official religious leader of the Hünfeld community His role included being the Jewish teacher, Chazan, Shochet and Bodek His wife Dina was born in Hünfeld, and I assume that he came from a different town. Probably moved to Hünfeld to marry Dina and take up the position His father was also entitled Chaver so either he taught himself or he went somewhere else to train Further Research: -Where did Joseph and Yitzchok come from? -Any more information on Joseph’s parents
S 2: Family Katz from Hünfeld, Kohanim http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/huenfeld_synagoge. htm Cemetery: Burghaun d. 1783, 26 Adar Rishon Kever in Burghaun Daughter of Menachem Ha. Levi 1762 -1828, 28 Elul Kever cannot be found d. 1819, 13 Cheshvan Kever in Burghaun Maiden name Löwenstein 1798 -1887, 8 Tammuz Kever in Burghaun Born in Hünfeld Based on a copy of her death certificate Hulda nee Rabenstein Chava Sarah Pess Nesanel Katz Esther Alexander Katz Naftali Hirsch Katz d. 1786, 2 Adar Rishon Kever in Burghaun d. 1803, 12 Kislev Kever in Burghaun Jakob Katz Joseph Steinberger Dina nee Katz Jakob Steinberger Isak Steinberger Jakob Steinberger was named after Jakob Katz and was born just one year after the latter’s passing Source: The death certificate of Dina nee Katz was kindly found by historian Anja Listmann It states that Dina’s parents were Jakob and Pess Katz and that she was born in Hünfeld The kevarim and further notes can be found on LAGIS I have made the assumption that Jakob was the son of Naftali Katz, and that thus part of the wider Katz family of Hünfeld The names Jakob and Mendel can be found in both parts of the Katz families at the same times, which is another clue that they are related Jacob and Pess Katz had three children born between 1798 -1804, of whom Dina was the eldest Further Research: -To confirm that Jakob Katz was the son of Naftali Katz -Any further info on Sarah Pess Löwenstein -Who were the siblings of Dina Katz?
S 3: Family Rosskamm from Weyhers, descending from Family Müller from Eiterfeld http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/weyhers_synagoge. htm http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/eiterfeld_synagoge. htm Cemetery: Rosskamm in Weyhers Cemetery, Müller from Eiterfeld in Burghaun Cemetery Elchonon Ahron Müller ha. Levi d. 1800, Isru Chag Succos Kever in Burghaun David Müller ha. Levi Yittel 1771 -1852, 1 st day of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz Kever in Weyhers Salomon Rosskamm Pess nee Müller Markus Mordechai Rosskamm Jette 1843 -1929, 4 Adar Sheni Kever in Burghaun <<Photo on left holding baby Fred d. 1804, 28 Elul Kever in Burghaun showing a jug, representing the Levi tribe. It says Segal on the grave rather than Müller or ha. Levi Bina nee Rosskamm Hulda nee Rabenstein Jakob Steinberger Isak Steinberger Source: The kevarim and further notes can be found on LAGIS The wedding certificate of Jakob Steinberger and Bina nee Rosskamm from Weyhers was kindly found by Elisabeth S. S. Cousin Stanley Stone has a Chumash with Markus Rosskamm written into it. Therefore I have assumed that Bina is a daughter of Markus. There was only one Rosskamm family in Weyhers: Salomon Rosskamm and his 4 sons, one of which was Markus Pess was the daughter of David from Eiterfeld (LAGIS/archives). I found only one David from Eiterfeld at this period in the local cemetery so I assume that he is the father of Pess. He had a son Joseph born just a few years after Pess; I assume he was her younger brother of Pess 1803 -1887, 2 Nissan Kever in Weyhers Stanley has his Chumash in which he wrote that he was born on 7 th May 1803 Siblings: Yaacov Koppel, Naftali Hirsch, Bunim Further Research: - To confirm that Markus Rosskamm was indeed the father of Bina Steinberger - To confirm that Pess Rosskamm was indeed the daughter of David Müller
S 4: Family Kaufherr et al from Lütter Cemetery: Weyhers Siblings: Menachem, Yitzchok, Yaacov Meier Kaufherr I have assumed that family Kaufherr means the family of Meier Kaufherr from Lütter, which is just 3 km from Weyhers. There is only one family Kaufherr in the entire region/LAGIS website Meier had three sons and based on the timings it makes sense that they are Jette’s brothers Menachem Kaufherr 1751 -1842 age 90, 28 Tammuz Kever in Weyhers Source: Bina nee Rosskamm’s wedding certificate says that she is a daughter of Jette Kaufherr Merle Jette nee Kaufherr 1764 -1824 age 60, 10 Cheshvan Kever in Weyhers Daughter of Daniel Ha. Kohen Markus Rosskamm Bina nee Rosskamm Hulda nee Rabenstein Jakob Steinberger Isak Steinberger Further Research: - To confirm that Meier Kaufherr was indeed the father of Jette nee Kaufherr -Any further info on Merle. Her maiden name was probably Katz, given that her father was a Kohen
Part 2 – Family Rabenstein et al
R 1 a: Family Rabenstein from Tann Source: Almost all the graves can be found on the LAGIS website. Further info can be found in the website notes http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/tann_synagoge. htm Cemetery: Tann Yitzchok d. 1768, 11 Shvat Kever in Tann Daughter of Ascher Nesanel d. 1787, 18 Adar Moved from Netra around 1750 to start small community in Tann Had 8 children, each chose their own surname including Rabenstein, Nelkenstock, Sichel, Heilbronn, Jungster Has around 800 traced descendants on family tree Pess Jakob Rabenstein d. 1819 Kever is in Tann but can no longer be identified 1854 -1924 age 70, 10 Sivan Kever in Tann Married Ernestine Rosenmann (mother of Hulda) After Ernestine passed away aged just 44, Meier married Marie Franken (Miriam bas Naftoli) Meier was alive and well when Uncle Fred and Grandad Martin were born. Source: LAGIS/Archives say that Breine’s maiden name was Stern and she came from Geisa R 2: Family Stern from Geisa In the small village of Geisa there was a family Stern. http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/geisa_friedhof. htm Cemetery: Geisa b. 1765 Meier Rabenstein’s brother Ahron is probably named after this Ahron, who is their grandfather 1774 -1844 Ahron Stern Moses Rabenstein Guedel Stern Breine nee Stern Breine’s Kever There is a record on Jewish. Gen with the full family of 6, and the parents listed as Ahron and Guedel Siblings: Loeb, Gelle (Plaut), David, Betti (Stern), Brendel (Braunschweiger) 1815 -1894 age 79, 20 Cheshvan Kever in Tann Meier Rabenstein Hulda nee Rabenstein They had three daughters each with a name beginning with the letter B, and interestingly they each had different nicknames beginning with the letter B. For example, our ancestor’s kever says Breine, but she was also known as Bertha and Babette. Brendel was buried in Burghaun and Betti married and moved to the USA Isak Steinberger Further Research: -To find out further information about family Stern from Geisa is in Thuringia rather than Hessen, and I cannot yet find the right archives and info
R 3: Family Rosenmann et al, from Kleineibstadt et al http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/kleineibstadt_synagoge. htm 1862 -1929 Marcus moved to America as a young adult (somewhere between ages 13 -23) but it is not known who accompanied him. He included Hulda, his niece, on his will. Photo above ^^ Our family had not heard of the American branch of the family until this research Married Pauline in 1853, with a dowry of 1, 000 Gulden (Credit: Doron Zeilberger et al) 1845 -1899 Kever in Tann but can no longer be identified Hebrew name Esther Pauline Cousin: Gustav Roan (Rosenmann) The surname is Rosenmann, but has in some secondary sources been misspelt as Rosemann, omitting the “n” in the middle Baer Rosenmann Ernestine Meier Rabenstein Hulda nee Rabenstein Gustav Roan (cousin from London) entered a Yad Vashem record for his father Feist Rosenmann, writing that Feist’s parents were Baer and Pauline Rosenman from Kleineibstadt Cousin James Woodley made an amazing find – the will of Marcus Rosenmann states that he gives $500 to his niece Hulda Steinberger, Hünfeld. This proves that Marcus was a brother of Ernestine. Goetz Baer Rosenmann Ernestine nee Rosenman Siblings: Feist, Marcus Gustav moved to London long before the war. He was close with Grandad Martin from when he arrived in 1938, and was in contact with the wider family until his passing in 1983 He was a son of Feist, and shortened his surname to Roan Mentioned on the Alemannia Judaica page with his trade “Kleinhandel” Sources: Grandad Martin captioned a picture of his grandmother, Ernestine Rosenmann 1845 -1899 Isak Steinberger Further Research: -To find further documents mentioning Ernestine -To find out any information about Baer, for example the marriage certificate probably exists -To find any records of Goetz Baer -Is it possible that Baer and Pauline travelled to America with their younger son Marcus, leaving the older Ernestine and Feist behind? -Further information about Gustav Roan
Source: An amazing project of our cousin Doron Zeilberger, descendant of Pauline Rosenmann’s brother Uri Shraga/Feist Zeilberger R 4: Family Zeilberger et al, from Ermershausen et al Gustav Roan (cousin from London) entered a Yad Vashem record stating that his grandparents were Baer and Pauline Rosenman from Kleineibstadt http: //www. alemannia-judaica. de/ermershausen_friedhof. htm From Burgpreppach, which is 10 km south of Ermershausen Kusel Schönemann 1781 -1846, 17 Sivan Siblings: Abraham Kusel Siblings: Uri Shraga/Feist, Kusel Siblings: Feist, Marcus Feist was clearly a name that was in the family. The custom in those days in Germany was that the son would sometimes use his father’s first name as his second name, as was the case for Lazarus Feist Zeilberger Regina Rechel nee Schönemann b. 1819 Feist Marx Zeilberger 1780 -1859, 8 Adar Rishon Presume Hebrew name was Elazar, known as Lozi Cattle Trader Lazarus Feist Zeilberger Pauline nee Zeilberger Baer Rosenmann Ernestine nee Rosenman Meier Rabenstein Hulda nee Rabenstein Isak Steinberger Siblings: Feist, Kusel Further Research: -To find further documents and graves showing this family -To find evidence showing that Pauline is that daughter of Lazarus and Regina Rechel -To find the graves of our ancestors in the Ermershausen Cemetery. Recehel is on this text list http: //www. rijo. homepage. tonline. de/pdf/EN_BY_JU_ermers. pdf

Kevarim (Graves) The LAGIS-Hessen. de website has so many kevarim of our ancestors Very helpfully, they have transcribed the wording from each kever, and even translated it into German, which can then easily translate into English There are further notes below with helpful information found in the archives about each person and their immediate family
