The Advocate: John 14: 15 -27, “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you will know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

The Advocate: John 14: 15 -27, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.

The Advocate: John 14: 15 -27, “Anyone who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them. Then Judas (not Iscariot) said, ‘But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world? ’ Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.

The Advocate: John 14: 15 -27, “My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. All this I have spoken while still with you.

The Advocate: John 14: 15 -27, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. ”

The Advocate: Let’s look at the role of the Holy Spirit in our life as our advocate. How does He advocate for you? First, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of Truth. (v. 16 -17, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. ”)

The Advocate: First, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of Truth. John 8: 31 -32, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. ” Truth is liberating. (light is a gift, not an intrusion) (e. g. , bitterness – bondage, forgiveness freedom; secrecy – shame; confession – freedom)

The Advocate: First, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of Truth. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just show us the truth about ourselves to liberate us, He also tells us the truth about God. (good; love)

The Advocate: Second, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of adoption. (v. 18, “I will not leave you as orphans. ” v. 20, “I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. ” v. 23, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. ”)

The Advocate: Second, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of adoption. Everyone wants to belong. Everyone wants a home. Everyone wants to be loved and secure. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of adoption. He reveals & seals the adoptive love of the Father in our hearts. We need the revelation of His adoptive love.

The Advocate: Second, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of adoption. Romans 8: 15 f, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father. ’

The Advocate: Second, the Holy Spirit advocates for us as the Spirit of adoption. Romans 8: 15 f, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and coheirs with Christ. ” (whispers; revelation of Scripture – 2 Tim 3: 16; encounters – HS weekend)

The Advocate: Third, the Holy Spirit advocates for us by teaching us and reminding us about the things of Jesus. V. 26, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ” We need to develop sensitivity to the Spirit’s voice.
