The Accounting Cycle Lesson 6 – Trial Balance 1
What is Trial Balance? Ø At a period end, all accounts balances will be shown on the trial balance to check the equality of total debit balances and total credit balances for all accounts. Ø Unless there are mistakes, the total sum of amount as shown on the debit column and the credit column of a trial balance must be equal under the double entry book-keeping system. 2
Layout of Trial Balance ß ß ß Trial balance consists of two columns – debit and credit columns. If an account is balanced. Nothing is to be shown on the trial balance. If an account has debit balance, it should be shown on the debit column of the trial balance, similarly, the credit balance should be posted to the credit column of the trial balance. 3
