The Top 10 Tips for Academic Success These are good strategies to start from day one!
#1: Go to Class! ü If you are NOT going to class you are missing something! ü It is the #1 strategy for success! ü Meet with your professor BEFORE you are having issues. ü Make a friend!
#2: Be Prepared For Class ü Read before you go to class! ü If you have questions, write them down. ü Study, study! ü If a professor provides lecture notes, print them off.
#3: Take Good Notes ü Find a good seat and pay attention ü Listen actively ü Don’t try to write everything down ü Ask questions ü Use note-taking strategies: ü Cornell Notes ü Modified Outline ü T-Notes
#4: Implement a Time Management System ü Fixed Commitment Calendar, Day Planner, Study Log… ü 2 -3 hours per credit hour ü Schedule specific study times for each class ü Break up your tasks to fight procrastination ü If it doesn’t work for you, try something else!
#5: Identify Good Study Environments ü Know when you are most alert and what time you are able to study best. ü Find a place that is comfortable, but not TOO comfortable! ü Limit your external distractions and reduce your internal distractions. ü NEVER study in bed!
#6: Read Actively ü Preview/Survey ü Create questions to read with a purpose ü Avoid “Happy Highlighter Syndrome” ü Alternate readings with active study strategies ü Ask “Why? ” “How? ” and “What if? ” questions
#7: Review and Test Yourself ü Review your notes every day. ü Create and plan a study strategy for each exam. ü Develop your own study guides and practice exams. ü Use test preparation techniques ü Flash cards ü Timelines ü Comparison charts ü Concept Maps
#8: Think Positive ü Emotional state can affect learning! ü Develop “want to” ü Find relevance, value, and importance in any task. ü Develop “can do” ü Eliminate feelings of self doubt or feelings of frustration. ü Setting up SMART goals can make a difference.
#9: Know Your Resources ü Be familiar with academic resources on and off campus. ü Use available resources such as: ü Academic Success Center ü Counseling and Psychological Services ü Career Center ü University Writing Center ü Disability Services ü Studyhub. tamu. edu ü Your most important resources are your professors and academic advisor.
#10: Seek Help ü Seek help the moment you begin struggling ü Use available resources ü Meet with your professors and talk to your academic advisors ü Come the Academic Success Center for help and referral.
