COMING TO AUSTRALIA � Sixty thousand year ago, there was an Ice Age on Earth. � Much of the world’s water was frozen in glaciers. This made the sea levels drop. � Australia, New Guinea, and Tasmania all formed one huge land mass. � The first people came to Australia during this time from Southeast Asia.
COMING TO AUSTRALIA – CONT. � They traveled in boats from island to island. � The Ice Age ended, glaciers melted, and sea levels rose. � Higher water cut off Australia from other areas. � The residents had no contact with the rest of the world for thousands of years. � These first residents were the ABORIGINES
WHERE THEY LIVED *Inner Australia was a huge desert. *On the coast, there were more plants, animals, and fish. *Aborigines lived in small groups mostly near the coastline for “natural resources”
SURVIVAL AND TRADE What they ate depended on where they lived. � They were hunter / gatherers that depended on whatever grew and lived naturally in different environments. They developed the BOOMERANG � Over 500 groups would trade with each other. � Trade helped keeps groups connected and cultures similar �
DREAMTIME � Many Aborigines refer to the “creation time” as “The Dreaming. ” � Dreamtime laid down the patterns of life for the Aborigines. � Dreaming stories include stories about creation of sacred places, land, people, animals, laws, and customs.
