Who are the Aboriginal people? • Aboriginal or Indigenous people have lived in Australia for over 50, 000 years. • Aboriginal Australians are split into two groups: Aboriginal peoples, who are related to those who already inhabited Australia when Britain began colonizing the island in 1788, and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who descend from residents of the Torres Strait Islands, a group of islands that is part of modern-day Queensland, Australia.
Who are the Aboriginal people? • When British settlers began colonizing Australia in 1788, between 750, 000 and 1. 25 million Aboriginal Australians are estimated to have lived there. Who are the Aboriginal people? • Though some Aboriginal Australians did resist —up to 20, 000 indigenous people died in violent conflict.
What happened next? • Between 1910 and 1970, government policies of assimilation led to between 10 and 33 percent of Aboriginal Australian children being forcibly removed from their homes. These “Stolen Generations” were put in adoptive families and institutions and forbidden from speaking their native languages. Their names were often changed.
Today… • Indigenous people have the right to live in freedom, peace and security. They must be free from genocide and other acts of violence including the removal of their children by force. Indigenous peoples have the right to practice and revitalise their cultural traditions and customs. .
Today… • Today, about three percent of Australia’s population has Aboriginal heritage. Aboriginal Australians still struggle to retain their ancient culture and fight for recognition. Many face racism, poverty and discrimination every day.
Homework: • Australian Aboriginal culture includes a number of practices and ceremonies centered on a belief in the Dreamtime and other mythology (for example Uluru/Ayers rock) • Using Google or the video we watched today in class, find information about the Aboriginal culture and write 15 sentences about what you find (It can be about one part of their culture or in general).
