The Abbey in the Oakwood Ryan La Pierre
The Abbey in the Oakwood Ryan La. Pierre Darth. Bucket 1 was here
The Artist Caspar David Friedrich was a romantic landscape artist born in Germany. Compared to his other paintings (which were either religious or basic landscapes) this was a darker painting. Not dark as in scary or disturbing, it just uses darker values than the other which is slightly eerie in itself, but the grave stones and dark figures make it slightly creepy, but you have to understand this was not his intentions, he was just painting a church or broken building.
Description- The Abbey in the Oakwood, was one of the more eerie paintings of Mr. Friedrich. The artist used many dark colors like greys and blacks, but also making a contrast at the top consisting of whites, lighter greys, and yellows! The texture is… realistic at best. It has great texture don’t get me wrong, it’s just so dark however that you can barley make out where the texture is or needs to be. The title, contains the painting well, not giving off anything out of the ordinary, just your average run down ruins or church!
Analysis This beautiful painting contains little to no movement, almost like a still in time, capturing beauty! The contrast between the dark ground and the bright sky is gorgeous, capturing the scene perfectly! The value is the highlight of the painting, creating beautiful dark and like contrasts, yet… I think it might be a little to dark to see, you can not see the slight details without brightening up the entire painting! The emphasis was mainly on the church or building in the middle!
Interpretation This painting has, honestly an unsettling mood, seeing the twisted broken trees, the tombstones sitting at the bottom with the dark figures, I believe that it might be a seen of a church with a funeral, that would explain the tombstones and the dark figures at the bottom. I can’t really see any meaning though, just a scene of a funeral.
Evaluation I believe that this painting was a technical success! Though it has it’s flaws like being too dark in certain areas, it grasps the environment well, almost like a picture. Nothing too gothic, but still a dark picture (Literally). But as I stated earlier, details are way too hidden, and hard to see, and could be improved if it was a little bit brighter!
NOOOOOOOOOO!
