How is it broken down? • Identification of commonality between this extract and at least one other part of the text= 2 marks • 2 marks can be picked up from selecting an appropriate reference from the extract in the exam paper and commenting on its effectiveness in relation to the question set: Quote + Comment = 2 marks • 4 marks are then available for selecting appropriate references from elsewhere in the text and commenting on their effectiveness in relation to the question. How to gain each of the 2 marks • Relevant reference to technique/idea/feature/character/aspect of another part of the text that deals with the question = 1 mark • Appropriate explanation of how this example explores or develops the issue in the question= 1 mark • You repeat this process at least twice for all 4 marks • When dealing with prose texts, SQA will accept a detailed reference in place of a specific quotation, however quotations are always preferred. • You may find it helpful to give more than 2 examples, just in case any of your answers are not detailed enough/not acceptable.
