The 6 Basic Needs of Living Things Water
The 6 Basic Needs of Living Things
Water • Animals – Need it to drink (hydration) – Some animals live in it • Plants – Need it for the photosynthesis process – Need it to stay hydrated
Food is needed as a source of energy • Animals • Herbivore – Eats only plants • Carnivore – Eats only other animals • Omnivore- Eats both plants and animals • Plants – Make their own food (photosynthesis)
Shelter • Animals – Need a place to sleep – Need a place to hide from other animals • Plants – Need a place for their roots.
Air • Animals – Need oxygen to breathe. • Plants – Need Carbon Dioxide (Co 2) for the photosynthesis process.
Carrying Capacity (space) Having the right amount of plants and animals in certain space. • Animals & Plants – Need a “just right” amount. Example: • Too many Carnivores = eat all of the other animals. • Not enough Carnivores= too many herbivores and they eat all of the plants.
Waste Removal • there needs to be some way to get rid of the waste. – Decomposers • Break down animal waste. • Break down dead plant & animals • return nutrients to the soil to help new plants grow.
An animal can live with no water 1. True 2. False
Animals can make their own food 1. Yes 2. No
Plants use oxygen for photosynthesis 1. True 2. False
Both plants and animals need a safe place to live. 1. Yes 2. No
If there are too many herbivores, there will be plenty of plants to go around. 1. Yes 2. No
Decomposers help to get rid of waste in an environment. 1. True 2. False
If there is an environment of only carnivores will they all survive? 1. Yes 2. No
