The 5 year Survival Rate for a Glioblastoma
The 5 -year Survival Rate for a Glioblastoma Tumor for the ages 20 -44 is… 17% With this small of a survival rate why are we not looking at different ways to treat brain tumors?
The Alternative Treatments for Brain Cancer MAYA TAKASHIMA MOUNT HEBRON HIGH SCHOOL KENNEDY KRIEGER INSTITUTE HERNANDO LOPEZ-BERTONI
Presentation Overview ● ● ● ● Why I am Interested My Internship What I do at my Internship My Research What I want to do with my Research Data Collection Final Product
Reasons of Interest ● Personal experience ○ Family Member ● Extreme interest in the Brain and Nervous System ● The fascination of the Brain
My Intership ● ● ● Location: Kennedy Krieger Institute (Research Building) Mentor: Hernando Lopez-Bertoni ● Neurologist A Day at my Internship: ● Lab Work ● ● Brain Tumor Stem Cells Passaging Cells DNA transfection Western Blot
My Research Question: What are alternative treatments for brain cancer? Hypothesis: There are different methods of treating brain cancer; there is the traditional method and the experimental method.
My Research ● ● ● Goal: Educate people on Traditional Treatments versus Experimental Treatments Traditional Treatments ● Chemotherapy ● Radiation Therapy Experimental Treatments ● Immunotherapy ● Novo. TTF-100 A ● Nanotherapy
Data Collection ● Meta-Analysis ○ Read, Analyzed, and Annotated the articles ○ Created a Data Chart ● Chemotherapy with alkylating agent, temozolomide, has been found to increase survival rate ● Immunotherapy needs more clinical trials, but has shown promising results ● Novo. TTF-100 A improves the quality of life, no increase in survival rate ● Radiation therapy after surgery shows no increased survival rate ● Nanotherapy doesn’t show increased survival rate, still very early to tell
Product ● A brochure ● Allows easy to read comparison of traditional treatments and experimental treatments ● The product will be given to the same presentation audience ● In a real world setting the target audience would be a group of patients
Conclusion A SURVIVAL RATE OF 5 YEARS DOES NOT HAVE TO REMAIN AT 17%; USING ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS MAY HELP TO INCREASE THE 5 YEAR SURVIVAL RATE
