Baby Boom • The Baby Boom was a period of increased birthrates lasting from 1946 to about 1965 • The baby boom began with the births of children who had been postponed during the Depression.
Baby Boom • Two other factors affected the birthrate as well. 1. 2. First, a larger proportion of adults married, and those who did had more children. More adults married at a younger age and young couples tended to have their children during the first few years of married life.
The Quiet Revolution • Quiet Revolution was a period of rapid change experienced in Québec from 1960 to 1966 • In 1962 the Lesage gov’t was re-elected. Lesage believed that Quebec needed to be more independent from the rest of Canada
The Quiet Revolution • Lesage asked the federal government for “special status” for Quebec • He felt Quebec needed more provincial powers than other provinces to protect its French language and culture
FLQ Terrorism • FLQ was a small terrorist group who wanted Quebec independence • By 1969 the FLQ started using bombs and violence to get attention
Consumerism • The purchase of products not out of need but of want and because they make one feel good • Post WWII consumer goods were now available • Refrigerators, radios and cars were now within reach of average income earners
