ANNUAL STARS & STRIPES DINNER The Stars and Stripes (S&S) Dinner provides an opportunity for leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to increase interest in, and passion for, STEM. • This is achieved by mentoring young people interested in STEM and providing a forum so that they can witness the contributions and successes of Blacks who have supported the Nation and our military.

Today The Stars & Stripes Event/Conference is a key event within the 35 th Annual Black Engineer of The Year Awards STEM Conference. It is without peer in terms of its significance, importance and impact on the lives of the people it touches. S&S includes mentoring initiatives and year round engagement with educators and students. Attendees all feel that excellence in STEM is of critical importance to the future economic and military security of the Unites States. Each year the featured service honors are rotated to each branch of military service.

The CHALLENGE – Burning Platform • People of color are underrepresented in STEM professions • Surveys reveals that 40% of underrepresented STEM professionals have been subject to discouragement throughout their careers. • Only 18. 5% of Black college students and 17. 3% of Hispanic college students pursue STEM careers. • Only 25% of underrepresented students who declare a STEM major earn undergraduate degrees compared to 50% for all.

Consider • Most recent International test scores tell us that in science U. S. ninth-graders were outperformed by ninth grade students in 23 countries including Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Republic of Korea, Estonia, Japan, Hungary, and Netherlands. • In math, U. S. ninth-graders were outperformed by their peers in 37 countries: Singapore, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Belgium, Netherlands, Estonia, Hungary, Malaysia, Latvia, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, and Australia. • Only 25 percent of U. S. high school graduates in 2015 were rated as proficient in math and only 22% percent were proficient in science.

Purpose • Promotes STEM by providing an opportunity and exposure to STEM Leaders • Increase interest and passion for STEM • Mentor those in STEM for a greater chance for success • Highlight the contribution of Blacks in support of the nation and the military

Mission The Stars and Stripes (S&S) Founders seek to enhance the goals of Black Engineer of the Year(BEYA) to support professional and pipeline development of minorities in STEM.

Stars & Stripes END STATE The Stars & Stripes Founders end state envisioned: A pipeline of STEM talent that reflects the face of the Nation

Summary The Stars & Stripes Founders facilitates its MISSION, PURPOSE and END STATE by holding their annual event at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference called the Stars and Stripes Dinner. The event is the pre-eminent gathering of senior military and civilian leaders where people of color are recognized for significant achievements in or in support of STEM.
