The 13 Colonies What has been happening in
The 13 Colonies
What has been happening in North America so far? First, we learned that the Native Americans were living all over North America and using their natural resources to survive. Who remembers what happened next?
Uh oh! Then, European explorers landed in the “New World” and claimed land for their countries. Indians were dying because of diseases and were not treated very well by the English explorers.
Back in Europe A lot people in Europe were not very happy with their lives. Many people wanted a place to have freedom of religion, to make more money, and to have a better life for their families. Where do you think these people decided to go?
To the New World! QUICK WRITE OPINION How would you feel if your family packed up and headed to the other side of the world? http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=ss. S 6 Uo Boiuc (Life in Jamestown)
Let the settlements begin! A lot of people who came to the New World, set up places to live along the Eastern coast of North America. Find the Eastern coast of North America. What county did this land “belong” to?
So…what is a colony anyways? These settlements were known as the 13 colonies and were controlled by England. A colony is a settlement set up by people far from their home country, but where they are ruled by their home country. Basically, this means that England could tell the people in the 13 colonies what to do!
What were the 13 colonies called? The 13 colonies were different from one another, and because of this, they were grouped into 3 different groups – New England colonies Mid-Atlantic (middle) colonies Southern colonies How do you think these groups were different than each other?
The New England (Northern) Colonies The Northern colonies were made up of: Massachusetts New Hampshire Rhode Island Connecticut Since these colonies were in the Northern part of the United States, what do you think life was like there?
The Northern Colonies What can you learn from reading this map?
The Northern Colonies Geography – poor, rocky soil (not good for farming ) Climate – very cold and harsh winters Resources – lumber (wood), fur, lots of fish! Economy – they built lots of ships and did a lot of fishing! People – they were very religious and had strict rules about church!
The Middle Colonies The Middle colonies were made up of: New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware How you think life was in the middle colonies?
The Middle Colonies What can you learn from reading this map?
The Middle Colonies – rich, fertile soil (great for growing wheat) Climate – warmer climate with a long growing season Resources – lots of grains and wheat to bake bread! Known as the BREAD BASKET! Economy – they built big cities and they were known for their trading ports (where ships could import/export goods) People – they were peaceful and got along with the Native Americans. They also did not believe in slavery and had Geography religious freedom.
The Southern Colonies The Southern colonies were made up of: Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia What might the southern colonies have been like?
The Southern Colonies What can you learn from reading this map?
The Southern Colonies Geography – lots of rich soil (great for farming ) Climate – long hot summers and short mild winters Resources – cash crops like cotton, tobacco, rice, and indigo Economy – farms grew lots of crops People – most people were farmers. There were small farms and large farms called plantations.
Farms in the South Plantation owners made a lot of money from their crops, but their farms were so big they could not pick all the crops themselves! What do you think happened as a result of this?
Slaves vs. Indentured Servants Slave traders went and bought people from Africa. The Slaves were forced to work against their will. They did not get paid. Indentured servants worked on farms. They were people who wanted to come to the colonies but couldn’t afford it. They worked for 7 years on a farm in exchange for a trip to America. They chose to come to America. Compare/Contrast Slaves and Indentured Servants
Georgia The first settlement in Georgia was a city called Savannah! The man that helped to create the colony of Georgia was James Oglethorpe.
Which group of colonies would you have wanted to live in? Why?
Roles of People Just like today, people back in the colonial days had different roles and jobs.
What Do are some roles or jobs that people have today in America? you think people had different jobs back then? WHY?
Today – all citizens over 18 can vote and have a say! BUT…BACK THEN? ! Only white Landowners were the only ones who could vote to make laws! Well that’s just cray-cray!
Do you remember which group of colonies were very religious? Puritans and Pilgrims came to the Northern colonies for religious freedom. Now I can pray in peace!
Do you remember who they people were that had to work on farms and plantations in the South? Slaves: were forced to come and work forever with no pay. Indentured Servants: wanted to come to America but they had no money. They worked on farms for about 7 years and then were free.
Can you name some jobs that women do today? Back then…. Women would only clean, make clothes, cook and teach their children. Is this similar to what someone in your family does today?
Some people make things for their job. Can you think of some jobs today where they make goods? If you lived in the colonies, what are some things you think people might have to make?
Artisans were people who made things that people needed (wigmaker, carpenter, silversmith, blacksmith, brick maker).
Okay, okay, now to the most important people…KIDS!!! You are a kid, right? Tell a friend what a TYPICAL day is like for kids in 2017.
