The 13 Colonies
New England Colonies • Least number of slaves • Fishing industry provided jobs for many in this group. • People lived mostly in towns near the coast • Very strict and religious society • Were created mainly for religious purposes
Massachusetts • Founder- Puritans/Pilgrims • Reason – Purify Anglican Church
Connecticut • Founder- Thomas Hooker • Reason- Wanted to grant religious freedom to those in the colonies.
New Hampshire • Founder- John Mason/ Puritans/ Joint Stock Company • Reason- Was founded not only for religious freedom but also to make $$$$.
Rhode Island • Founder- Roger Williams • Reason- Religious tolerance for all. (Remember the Great Awakening)
Middle Colonies • Produced grains such as wheat, oats, and barley (Breadbasket Colonies) • Produced manufactured items such as guns, clocks, and cloth. • Had a very diverse population. • People lived spread out, inland, and on 3 main rivers. Hudson , Delaware, and Susquehanna
Pennsylvania • Founder- William Penn • Reason- A refuge for Quakers.
New Jersey • Founder- Proprietary colony founded by Lord Berkley and Carteret. • Reason- To make $$$$
New York • Founder- The Duke of York • Reason- To get rid of the Dutch and to make $$$$
Delaware • Founder-Joint stock company. Was bought by William Penn from New York. • Reason- To give Pennsylvania access to the sea.
Southern Colonies • Largest population of slaves (highest percentage over all) • Produced many crops such as corn, tobacco, rice and indigo. • Very different from the other two groups. Traded extensively with Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Virginia • Founder- The Virginia Company of London • Reason- To make $$$$
North Carolina • Founder- Joint Stock Company • Reason- To make $$$$
South Carolina • Founder- Joint Stock Company • Reason- To make $$$$
Georgia • Founder- James Oglethorpe • Reason- Founded to give debtors a second chance at life and to act as a buffer zone from Spanish Florida.
Maryland • Founder- George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) • Reason- As a refuge for Catholics (Remember they were not very popular)
