TEXTURE DEFINITION • TEXTURE IS AN ELEMENT OF ART, USED TO DESCRIBE EITHER THE WAY A THREEDIMENSIONAL WORK ACTUALLY FEELS WHEN TOUCHED, OR THE VISUAL "FEEL" OF A TWODIMENSIONAL WORK.

TEXTURE UNIT VOCABULARY Actual Texture: The Application of textured objects to a piece, or the tactile feel of a piece through the addition of materials (i. e, carvings, heavy paint use, etc. ) Visual/Simulated Texture: Texture created that looks incredibly realistic by manipulating & utilizing light, shadow, line, rhythm and other elements. Invented Texture: Textures that are created/invented by the artist/designer. These are made of expressive or decorative movements, and not a representation of an actual texture.

VOCABULARY • TACTILE: PERCEPTION OF OR ACTUAL FEEL OF A PIECE. • GLOSSY: SEEMINGLY SMOOTH, WITH A SHINE. GENERALLY USED FOR GLASS LIKE AESTHETIC. • MATTE: A DULL OR SLIGHTLY ROUGHENED SURFACE WITH NO SHEEN. • BALANCE: A DISTRIBUTION OF VISUAL WEIGHT OF A PIECE, REFERRING TO HOW THE ELEMENTS OF A PIECE ARRANGED.

VOCABULARY CONTINUED • SMOOTH: A SURFACE OR PIECE FREE OF IRREGULARITIES OR ROUGHNESS. • ROUGH: A COARSE OR UNEVEN SURFACE, WITH CRACKS OR IRREGULARITIES. • REPETITION: ONE OBJECT OR SHAPE REPEATED IN A SEQUENCE. • RHYTHM: REGULAR REPETITION OF ELEMENTS TO CREATE COHESIVENESS.

What is a Biome? Biomes are large ecological areas on the earth’s surface, with fauna and flora (animals and plants) adapting to their environment. Biomes are often defined by abiotic factors such as climate, relief, geology, soils and vegetation. A biome is NOT an ecosystem. Plants or animals in any of the biomes have special adaptations that make it possible for them to exist in that area. You may find many units of ecosystems within one biome. Types of Biomes Desert: Hot and Dry Deserts, Semi Arid Deserts, Coastal Deserts and Cold Deserts. Aquatic: Aquatic biomes are grouped into two, Freshwater Biomes (lakes and ponds, rivers and streams, wetlands) and Marine Biomes (oceans, coral reefs and estuaries). Forest: There are three main biomes that make up Forest Biomes. These are the Tropical Rainforest, Temperate and Boreal Forests (also called the Taiga) Grassland: There are two main types of grassland biomes: the Savanna Grasslands and the Temperate Grasslands. Tundra: There are two major tundra biomes—The Artic Tundra and the Alpine Tundra.
