Topic Sentences/Thesis Statements
Handout Annotations • Use your annotating skills to understand assignments • What is the purpose of the assignment? • What do you need to do? • When is it due? • What questions do you have?
What are text features? Why do textbooks use different fonts, (sub)headings, organization structures, pictures, or graphics?
How do these features help us understand Layout/Organization: • How do text features help you understand the layout/organization of the book? A chapter? A section? • Which features appear where?
Features for Intentional Strategy Use • How do text features connect to literacy strategy use? • Think about GLOB, PROB, SUP strategies from the MARSI • In your small group • You have 10 minutes • Identify a text feature and how it helps you apply one of the types of reading strategies we’ve discussed in class • What specific actions/steps would you take to make use of the feature? • EX: Turning the heading into a question that I can answer while I read is an example of a SUP strategy
Vocabulary Support • How do your textbooks introduce and explain new vocabulary words? • How do you know when the authors are introducing a key vocabulary word? • How do they share the meaning of that word? • In your small group • Identify a text feature and how it helps you understand important vocabulary • What specific actions/steps would you take to make use of the feature? • EX: Bold-face words are followed by pronunciation and italicized Latin in the anatomy text. I can write down the word and highlight the definition • Report back to class after 10 minutes
