Sample Response In the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the author uses many different symbols to clarify themes. One of the symbols used in this play was mended stockings. This exemplifies the idea of betrayal. Mended stockings symbolize that Linda was not really important for Willy as he was for her. When he betrayed Linda with the Woman, he also betrayed his whole family. The theme of betrayal was one of the most interesting themes in this play because this theme helped to clarify and connect why Willy felt guilty. To illustrate how guilty Willy felt on page 26 the author states, “Willy: I won’t have you mending stockings in this house! Now throw them out” meaning that Willy felt really bad when he saw Linda mending the stockings because that reminds him of his betrayal when he gave the Woman (his love) the stockings Linda deserved and needed to have. On page 96, to illustrate how Willy also betrayed his son, the author states, “Biff: You-you gave her mama’s stockings. ” This quote shows the deception Biff felt from his father when he found out his father betrayed his mother with the Woman. The author makes this comparison to clarify the connection of mended stockings with theme of betrayal. Overall, the symbol of mending the stockings represents that Linda loves Willy for who he is. She never cares whether he is rich or not. What makes him guilty is the reminder that he betrayed a real woman and his family for a woman who did not care about money. The Woman is the opposite of Linda. She cares about materials things by asking him to buy her the stockings Linda deserves. That’s how mended stockings symbolize and represent theme of betrayal.
