What is text scroll mapping? Textmapping starts with a scroll. Scrolls are an ancient technology, but they offer clear advantages over books - advantages that are particularly useful in the context of classroom instruction. When you open a book, you can only see two facing pages at a time; when you roll out a scroll, you can see the entire text - the entire length of the scroll - all at once. Here's how it looks:

Benefits of Text Scroll Mapping for Students ● ● ● Scrolls give you a better handle on comprehension. They enable you to see more information, such as the heading structure, illustrations, captions, keywords, and other important pre-reading cues. Unlike books, scrolls enable you to visually comprehend the text as a whole; they make the notion of a whole text concrete and explicit; they set the scene for you to model the skills and strategies that are the foundation of comprehension. Scrolls enable the eye to comprehend. The simple act of displaying a text in scrollform reveals information which often otherwise goes unnoticed. This enriches discussion and understanding. Provides a common focus for the group. The value of mapping is that it enables comprehension to be modeled in great detail. It makes the structure of information explicit and conspicuously clear. In essence, it is the illustration of comprehension.

Your Assignment ● With your group, tape your article down in a row, one page after the other, across your large white art paper. ● As a group, read your article and identify the elements listed on your assignment sheet. Use the markers provided to outline these elements on the large white art paper surrounding your article. ● Be sure to use clear headings and lines to clearly connect your markings or annotations to the article that you are referencing. ● I will grade your group’s text scroll using the rubric provided with your assignment details. Your group’s text scroll should show your mastery of the skills we learned and practiced last quarter. ● You may use your notes from last quarter to help you with creating your group’s text scroll.
