But…. . –THERE IS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
But…. . –THERE IS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT • Texas ranks 46 th nationally in attainment of associate degrees. • 59% of all new jobs in Texas will require postsecondary training or education by 2020. Currently, 34% of Texans aged 25 -34 have an associates degree or higher. • In the last decade, DE Reading and Writing students’ completion of a related college level course in one year has not reached 25%. DE Math students’ rates remained at 3 7%. • Of prepared students, 2/3 or less complete a college level Reading or Writing course in one year. And only about 40% of prepared Math students do so. • Among those who transfer, 39% lose all credits, 28% transfer some, and only 33% transfer all credits. LESSONS WE’VE LEARNED • TOGETHER We can build a large collective focus on student success. Collaboration is key. • We still have systems and structural barriers to address. Interventions have made a difference, but not enough. Many students lose gains in success after additional support ends. • We must impact more students. • We must make front door engagement inescapable. • We will not make the needed change without faculty and advisors working together to simplify students’ progression to success. • Lasting change requires good policy implementation.
TRANSFORMATION… From an institution characterized by: A focus on student access → Fragmented course-taking → Low rates of student success → Tolerance of achievement gaps → To one characterized by: A culture of anecdote → Individual faculty prerogative → A culture of evidence Collective responsibility for student success Culture of isolation → Emphasis on boutique programs → Focus on teaching → Information infrastructure as management support → Funding tied to enrollment → Culture of collaboration Effective education at scale Focus on learning Information infrastructure as learning analytics Funding tied to enrollment, institutional performance, and student success A focus on access and student success Clear, coherent educational pathways High rates of student success Commitment to eradicate achievement gaps Source: AACC 21 st Century Commission Report: Reclaiming the American Dream: Community Colleges and the Nation’s Future http: //www. aacc. nche. edu/aboutcc/21 stcenturyreport_old/index. html
