Why do we need SVCs? - Particle accelerators (power converters, RF etc. ) are very rough loads, comparable to heavy industry such as steel plants and rolling mills etc. - However, to obtain the precision required by the particle accelerators, the electrical network voltage needs to be a perfect 50 Hz sine-wave - In addition, our large cycles of reactive power would disturb the European 400 k. V network. SVCs strongly reduce the impact we have onto the outside network. Purpose of Static Var Compensators Assure the power quality of the 18 k. V networks, to allow the precision our accelerators require. SVC Tests and Commissioning activities in LS 2 (TE-EPC), FOM 25. 8. 2020 4

Basic topology of an SVC An SVC is composed of: TCR: Thyristor-Controlled Reactor Functions: • Network voltage stabilisation • Variable reactive power compensation Harmonic filters: passive filters tuned to specific frequencies Functions: • Harmonic filtering • Fixed reactive power compensation SVC Tests and Commissioning activities in LS 2 (TE-EPC), FOM 25. 8. 2020 5

SVCs for LHC The projects SEQ 4/SEQ 8 concern the consolidation of the harmonic filters. SEQ 4: Installation work is 50% completed, Powering tests in W 46, 47, 48/2020 SEQ 8: Installation work will take place W 36 – W 49/2020, Powering tests in W 51/2020 and W 1/2021 In addition, the Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCRs) receive a new digital control system (in all 4 LHC points). Impact of SVC switching is always limited to the machine network of the concerned LHC point. Switching manoeuvres always coordinated with CCC-TI.
