Diagnostic Tests A Diagnostic test is a test that is meant to display what the student knows and what s/he does not know. The test can check the students’ knowledge before starting a particular course. Diagnostic tests are supposed to spot the students’ weak and strong points. A diagnostic test is designed to diagnose a particular aspect of a particular language. Examples: word spelling - testing composition.

Placement Tests It is used to place new students in the right class in

Placement Tests It is used to place new students in the right class in a school. It is designed to show good a student is in English in relation to a previously agreed system of levels. The placement test should deal exactly with the language skills relevant to those that will be taught during a particular course. Examples: The tests that colleges and universities use to assess college readiness and place students into their initial classes.

Progress or Achievement Tests It is designed to measure students’ language and their skill

Progress or Achievement Tests It is designed to measure students’ language and their skill progress in relation to the syllabus they have been following. This type is directly related to language courses and done during the course. Examples: the Cambridge ESOL.

Proficiency Tests It is designed to measure students’ knowledge and ability in a language.

Who perform the tasks satisfactorily ‘pass’, those who don’t, ‘fail’. We measure students’ progress in relation to meaningful criteria. Examples: Driving tests.

Norm Referenced Test This kind of testing relates one student’s performance to that of other students. We don’t say that student is capable of doing well in the language but we say the student gained a score that placed him/her in the top five students who have taken the same test.

Standardized Test Standardized test is any form of test that requires all test takers to answer the same questions, or a selection of questions from common bank of questions, in the same way, and that is scored in a “standard” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of individual students or groups of students.
