Maintain Rechargeable Power Packs q q q Electronics 1: Strand 3 Robotics 1: Strand 4 Objective 3: Use a batteries, solar cells or generator to provide energy for the operation of small motors and other mechanical devices. Identify batteries and describe their uses and hazards.
Battery Packs q q q 7. 2 volt robot battery Capacity: 1000 -2000 m. Ah Charging time: 1. 4 – 2. 8 hrs q q q 12 volt FRC Robot battery Capacity: 18 Ah Charging time: 5. 0 – 8. 0 hrs NOTE: the batteries used to power VEX systems are also known as power packs
Amp-hours (Ah) and milli amp-hours (m. Ah) q q q An amp-hour is the amount of amps a battery can deliver for one hour The prefix milli is used to indicate one thousandth (1/1000) of a unit in the SI measurement system For example: a millimeter (mm) is one thousandth (1/1000 or 0. 001) of a meter; a milliamp-hour (m. Ah) is 0. 001 of an amp-hour.
Amp-Hours (Ah) q q 2 Ah (2000 m. Ah) The battery can produce a steady charge of 2 amps for one hour q q 1 Ah (1000 m. Ah) The battery can produce a steady charge of 1 amp for one hour
Measuring DC Voltage q q q Step 1: Set multimeter on DC voltage Step 2: Plug red probe in volts, ohms, and continuity socket Step 3: Be sure black probe is in the com socket
Measuring DC Voltage q q q Step 4: Place probes in socket of battery pack, red to red (+), black to black (-) Step 5: Note voltage value from the multimeter If reading is negative, you can either ignore the minus sign or reverse the probes
Determining Battery Charge Status q 7. 2 Volt batteries Fully Charged = 8. 2 VDC Needs Charge = 7. 2 VDC Defective = less than 6 VDC q 12 Volt Batteries Fully Charged = 13. 6 VDC Needs Charge = 12 VDC Defective = less than 10 VDC q 18 Volt batteries Fully Charged = 20. 5 VDC Needs Charge = 18 VDC Defective = less than 15 VDC
