TEST CONSTRUCTION AND STANDARDIZATION
Mostly the word “TEST” is defined as a series of questions on the basis of which some information is sought. But in psychology the meaning of Test is more than this. Anne Anastasi has defined psychological test as “essentially an objective and standardized measure of sample of behaviour”
Test construction pertains to preparation of item , item analysis and selection of reliable and valid item for final test and finaly testing the reliability and validity of the developed test. whereas the Test standardization deals with development of norms. When one sets out to construct a test , there are several considerations that will determine one’s approach and operations.
Item Planning And Construction Of Construction of item start with the planning done earlier. If the test constructor decides to prepare an essay test; the essay items are written down , if he decides to construct an objective test than multiple choice item , completion item , pictorial form of item etc. are written down. mainly it depends on the purpose that test constructor decides to write any of these objective types of items.
Item writing is a creative art. There are no set rules to guide for writing of good items. It directly depends upon the item writer’s intution , imagination , experience and practice. The number of items/length of a test depends on the previous planning that how much items we need to cover the domain under study. The number of items should be two times than the items required for the original test.
Sources for the Insight of Items Firstly through already made test what are their strengths , weakness and content of the test. The ideas for writing items not produced in mind automatically rather they require certain factors : The common source of such factors are textbooks , journals , discussions , questions for interview , course outlines and other instructional material.
Requirement for Good and Appropriate Item- v The item writer must have a thorough knowledge and complete mastery of the subject matter means he must be fully acquainted with all facts , principle misconceptions , fallacies in a particular field. So that he able to write good and appropriate items. v The item writer must be fully aware of those person for whom the test is meant. He must be aware of intelligence level of those persons so that he may manipulate the difficulty level of the items.
v The item writer must be familiar with different types of items along with their with advantages and disadvantages. v The item writer must have a large vocabulary. He must know the different meanings of a word so that confusion in writing items may be avoided. -->After the items have been written down , they are reviewed by some experts or by the item writer himself and arranged in the order in which they are to appear in the final test.
