Terabit Ethernet Issues Backward compatibility What is it
Terabit Ethernet Issues • Backward compatibility What is it? • Standard Ethernet protocol that can reach data transfer speeds of 1, 000 Mb/s • First generation will require use of fiber optic cables instead of twisted pair (Cat. V) cable • 100 times faster than the current standard (10 Gb/s Ethernet is available, but is typically only used in data centers due to cost) • Research is being headed by University of California Santa Barbara • New devices are built to still communicate with older devices and so must use the same packet size • Speed has increased by 1, 000 times, but packet size has stayed the same. • There are 208 bits of overhead for every 1500 bits of data. Why do we need it? • At 10 Mb/s overhead is roughly 1. 38 Mb/s • Global IP traffic has increased more than • At 1, 000 Mb/s , overhead is roughly fourfold in the past 5 years, and will 138, 666 Mb/s increase threefold over the next 5 years. • Content Delivery Networks (Netflix, Pandora etc. ) will carry over half of Internet traffic in 2017 • Nearly half of all IP traffic will originate with non-PC devices by 2017 • Traffic from wireless and mobile devices will exceed traffic from wired devices by 2016
