Tennis • Tennis requires high cardiorespiratory endurance • Requires muscular strength • Common tennis injuries include: • Tennis elbow • Rotator cuff tears • Jumper’s knee
Signs and symptoms • Athlete feels pain in lateral elbow • Burning, weak grip strength • AT sees no visible swelling/inflammation • Sees athlete having difficulty moving elbow • AT applies pressure to affected area • Observes as athlete moves elbow, wrist
Important Information • Affected muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, nerves • extensor carpi radialis brevis, forearm, humerus • Playing through injury = improperly healing • Athlete will experience continuous pain • Most prevalent in adults ages 30 -50 • Caused by overuse over time
Diagnosis and treatment • Legitimate injuries are diagnosed by a doctor • Doctors ask about • Hot, sharp pain in affected area • Tender tissue in elbow and forearm
Treatment • Immediate treatment includes: • Over the counter pain medicine, R. I. C. E. • Long term treatment if symptoms continue: • Surgery, injections into tendons relieve pain • Athlete will need psychological support: • Relieve stress from injury, regain motivation
Rehabilitation • Exercises include: • Ball/sock squeeze, wrist deviation • Wrist curls, bicep curls • FITT Principle • Daily until pain resides, intensity level 2 • Stretching and strengthening exercises, 8 -12 reps each
Prevention • Equipment • Proper technique, don’t strain forearm/elbow • Proper technique lessens risk of injury • Strength/flexibility training with proper form • Safety • Avoid strenuous tasks & playing through pain
