Ten Things Every Citizen Should Know Michael Webber
Independence l When our country was the 13 Colonies, we were under British Rule. We didn’t like this because they tried to control us but they wouldn’t give us a say in major decisions.
Bill of Rights l The first Ten Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights. This is a list of rights that the government can’t take away from you if you are a citizen.
Democracy l Our government is known as a democracy. It s very important that citizens know what this means. In democracies, the people of the country vote on major decisions. This way, it’s fair because everyone that wanted their say in the decision was able to do so.
Equality l In the Constitution, which is the basis of our country, it states that all people all created equal. Because of this, everyone should be treated equally and fairly, no matter what their background is.
How our government works l Every citizen should be informed of the processes of our government. For example, a citizen should know how many representatives a certain state gets.
The Three Branches of Our Government l Citizens should know the three branches and what is different about all of them. The branches are Judicial, Legislative, and Executive. Judicial interprets the law, Legislative makes the law, and Executive carries out the law.
Elections l Citizens should know everything about elections and who is running. Citizens should know what the candidate stands for. They should also know the candidates political parties and what they plan to do to make our country better.
Technology l Today’s society is mostly run by technology. Citizens should know how to use technology efficiently so that they can keep up with current events and other important information.
Laws l Citizens definitely need to know what’s illegal and legal in our country. That’s very important.
History l Citizens need to know American History because it teaches everything that’s happened to us as a country to make us what we are today.
