What is Extensive Reading?
Graded readers
Features of Extensive Reading Students a lot of different books they enjoy They select something easy they can read without a dictionary Students often selects their own books The aim is fluency and speed They read in class and / or at home Emphasis on reading for comprehension / enjoyment They should read for 2 -3 hours a week
Benefits of Extensive Reading As they read faster, comprehension increases They can meet words and grammar many times They learn more about the world and life in general Everyone reads what they want Everyone reads at their own pace Excellent preparation for tests as it consolidates language learning
Types of ER Activities • Pre-reading activities – To build background – To teach some words or language needed • While reading activities – Filling in a sheet – Looking up words • Post reading activities – Poster presentation / story narration – Taking a comprehension test

Conversation Bomb (“Hot potatoes”) • Students sit in a circle • The reader starts the timer for a secret amount of time (60 seconds, 75 seconds etc. ) • The students ask questions in turn and change after the question was answered • When the timer (‘bomb’) goes off, that student loses
Book hunt • Teacher makes a quiz • Students have to find the answers by searching the library • Helps students to know what books are in the library • You can give them a time limit, or points for each one • Remind them of library manners

Speed Chatting in a chain • Student 1 tells the story of their book in one minute to Student 2 • Student 2 tells the same story to student 3 • Student 3 tells it to student 4… etc. • The last student retells it to student 1 and they compare differences
