Location • Deciduous temperate forests can be found in the eastern half of North America and the middle of Europe. There also many deciduous forests in Asia as well. They also occur in parts of Russia, Japan, and eastern China.
Plants • • Plants in temperate deciduous forests grow in layers. Tall trees such as maple, oak, and birch trees grow in this environment. Because of the amount of light that reaches the forest floor, more ferns, herbs, and mosses grow in deciduous forests. Sassafras, Red Buds, and Breeches also grow here.
Animals • Animals that are found in this environment include squirrels, wolves, deer, raccoons, bears, owls, and specific types of birds such as the Bald Eagle. • Also, beavers, ants, bees, frogs, foxes, ducks, rabbits, and skunks can be found in this Biome.
Climate • • • Temperate Deciduous Forests have four distinct seasons; Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Summers usually begin in June and last until August. While winters begin in December and average temperatures reach below freezing. Almost all of the world’s deciduous forest are located by an ocean. Average temperatures in the summer are about 70 degrees. The average year-round temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Precipitation • The average rainfall is between 30 to 60 inches a year. • In the winter, precipitation occurs in the form of ice or frozen water. • Temperate Deciduous Forest have large amounts of snow fall in the winter.
Adaptations • • • Animals are adapted to use the forest plants for food and shelter. Most birds in this Biome must be migratory because of the harsh winter temperature. Animals must also develop thicker fur or heir to live in this environment to be able to stay warm in the winter. During the winter, there is little water available for animals so they must adapt to a smaller amount of water. Animals must also be prepared for hot summers as well.
Plant Adaptations • Trees in this biome shed their leaves in the winter. By shedding their leaves, they cannot transpire. Consequently, they are able to retain water for the winter. • Plants must be able to survive harsh temperatures both hot and cold. • Pine Trees are common in these areas because they can survive most cold environments.
Ohio! • Ohio is an example of a temperate deciduous forest. • We experience all four seasons and you should all recognize all of the pictures on our presentation because you LIVE IT!
Fun Facts! • The largest tree in the world is found right here in the United States. You can find it in California. This giant sequoia tree is 275 feet tall and 95 feet around. • The largest forest in the world covers parts of Scandinavia and northern Russia. It has over 3. 5 million square miles of land covered in trees!
