Temperate Deciduous Forest
What are the characteristics of the temperate deciduous forest? • Found in eastern United States and Europe • Few evergreens, but dominated by communities of deciduous trees • Avgerage 50 – 300 cm of precipitation per year
Location of World Map

What are deciduous trees? • Trees that shed (lose) their leaves for a part of every year. – During the cold or dry season, depending on the climate • Trees remain bare until they grow new leaves each spring
Oak tree
Why do deciduous trees lose their leaves? • An adaptation to help the survive the changing seasons of the biome – Summer: Broad leaves used to obtain energy from sun – Fall: Chlorophyll begins to decompose – Winter: Trees become dormant and lose leaves – Spring: trees begin to grow new leaves and prepare for summer
Why can’t deciduous trees keeps their leaves during the winter? • If they kept their leaves , the water in the leaves would freeze into ice, damaging the leaves
Difference between deciduous tree leaves and evergreens? Deciduous Evergreen
How many seasons does the temperate deciduous forest biome have? • 4 – Winter, spring, summer, and fall
Seasons of deciduous forest
Why are their seasons? • The four seasons happen because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis.

Temperate Rain Forest
What are the characteristics of temperate rain forest? • Found in New Zeland, southern Chile, and the Pacific Northwest of US • Avg temp between 9 – 12 degrees Celsius • Avg precipitation ranges from 200 – 400 cm/year • Trees with needlelike leaves dominate these forest (evergreens)

What are the differences between temperate deciduous and temperate rain forest? • Temperate rain forest = evergreens • Temperate deciduous = trees lose leaves in winter • Temperate rain forest receives more precipitation per year than temperate deciduous
Tropical Rain Forest
What are the characteristics of tropical rain forest? • Warm temperatures, wet weather, and lush plant growth – Great diversity of plants and animals • Located near the equator • Avg temp is about 25 degrees Celsius • Receive at least 200 cm of rain per year – Sometimes as much as 600 cm
Where do all of the different plants and animals live? • Scientist have divided the rain forest into four zones based on the types of plants and animals that live there. – Forest floor (Bottom zone) – Understory – Canopy – Emergent (Top zone)
