Who • Started by the American Temperance Society in 1826. There were more than 200, 000 people in the group by the 1830 s. Mary hunt was also involved in the movement. She had a high position by being involved in the movement. Frances Willard was also an important person of the movement. She was the national president of the Womens' Christian Temperance Union.
What • A widespread movement that promoted the complete abstinence of alcohol. It began after the American Revolution in the early 19 th Century(1820 s). States that were involved in this movement, at the time, were Connecticut, Virginia, and New York.
Where • The temperance movement started mainly in Connecticut, Virginia, New York. Also, movements were started in England the British colonies of New Zealand Australia. The first statewide success of the movement was in Maine.
When • The American Temperance Society began in 1826 and began to wane down in the 1930's because it was seen as an unhealthy way of distorting drinking habits.
Why The main cause of the Temperance movement was brought on by religion and religious views of most people. Women also would drink while pregnant which would lead to birth defects of the baby. Once soldiers came back from the war (American Revolution) they drunk heavily which would cause them to be abusive primarily towards their wives and children.
How • People that were joining the movement began joining the "Cold Water Army, " which was a group that pledged to stop drinking.
