Hawk Roosting <1연> I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed. Inaction, no falsifying dream Between my hooked head and hooked feet: Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat. 나는 숲 꼭대기에 앉아 있다, 눈을 감고. 움직임도, 기대를 저버리는 꿈도 전혀 없다 내 구부러진 머리와 구부러진 발 사이엔. 혹은 잠 속에서 완벽한 살해를 연습하고 먹는다.

<2연> The convenience of the high trees! The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray Are of advantage to me; And the earth's face upward for my inspection. 높은 나무들의 편리함이며! 대기의 부력과 태양 광선은 내게 유리하다. 그리고 대지의 얼굴은 내가 조사하도록 위로 향해 있다.

<3연> My feet are locked upon the rough bark. It took the whole of Creation To produce my foot, my each feather: Now I hold Creation in my foot 내 발은 거친 나무껍질에 박혀 있다. 내 발 하나, 내 깃털 하나 만드는데 창조의 전 과정이 소요되었다. 이제 나는 만물을 내 발로 잡는다

<5연> The allotment of death. For the one path of my flight is direct Through the bones of the living. No arguments assert my right: 죽음의 배당. 내 비상(飛翔)의 한결같은 길은 살아 있는 것의 뼈를 관통하는 것이기에. 어떤 논의도 내 권리에 대해 왈가왈부할 수 없다.

<6연> The sun is behind me. Nothing has changed since I began. My eye has permitted no change. I am going to keep things like this. 해는 내 뒤에 있다. 내가 생긴 이래 변한 건 아무 것도 없다. 내 눈은 어떤 변화도 허락하지 않았다. 앞으로도 이처럼 계속하리라.
