Problem Solving • • Thoughtful solutions Short-term (hours or days) Long-term (weeks or months) Uses science, technology, and design

What it takes to solve problems: • • • Time Thought Creativity Understanding what is needed Money Other people

System A system is an group of interrelated parts designed to achieve a goal. All systems include an input, process and an output. Identify this technology system.

Input is the command give an system, it is also the desired result. Resources like time, energy, and materials are part of an input. Identify what the input is from this picture.

Process The process is the action part of a system. It combines resources and produces a result, which is the output. Identify what process may be taking place in this picture.

Output The output is the product of a system. It is the actual result. If a system works correctly, the output matches the input or desired result. Identify the system, input and output in the picture above.

Open-loop System A traffic light cannot monitor itself, change on its own, it is limited to a program which is based on time. An open loop system cannot alter the output based upon conditions, a traffic light will be red for a certain amount of time whether or not there is one car or two. Identify another closed loop system.

Closed-Loop System A closed-loop system can respond to stimuli in the environment or conditions which so it can alter the inputs or outputs. Feedback is the information about a system’s that is used to adjust the system. If you drive a bike you can adjust the pedaling or braking based upon feedback from the environment. Identify another closed loop system.

Product • In marketing, a product is anything that can be offered to a market that might satisfy a want or need. • In retailing, products are called merchandise. • In manufacturing, products are bought as raw materials and sold as finished goods. Identify one product from marketing, retail, and manufacturing.

Designing Process of creating and planning a product or system

Society A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Identify your society. Describe one characteristic.

Society and Environment • Disposing of wastes without harming the environment • Producing enough energy to meet our increasing needs • Ensuring a clean supply of water

Impact The effect or result of actions. In our society our desire for new technology impacts our natural resources (minerals, wood, water, etc).
