Linking Parts Together Linking is the mechanical function performed different components (items) that connect different parts of a technical object together Basically, linking is how two parts stay together
Characteristics of Links To describe links in various technical objects, each link is described with four basic characteristics: Direct or Indirect Rigid or Flexible Removable or Non-Removable Complete or Partial
Direct or Indirect Direct : two parts are held together without a linking component (no nail, no screw, no glue) Indirect: two parts are held together with a linking component (there is a nail, or screw, or glue) Direct Indirect
Rigid or Flexible Rigid: a link is rigid if the linking component or the surfaces of the linked parts are rigid Flexible: a link is flexible if the linking component or the surfaces of the linked parts can be deformed. Usually springs or rubber is used. Rigid Flexible
Removable or Non-removable Removable: a link is removable when the linked parts can be separated without damaging either their surfaces or the linking component. Non-removable: a link is non-removable when separating the linked parts damages their surfaces or their linking component. Removable Non-removable
Complete or Partial Complete: a link is complete when it prevents linked parts from moving independently of one another Partial: a link is partial when at least one part can move independently of the other parts Complete Partial
Example Pen + Pen Cap Direct or Indirect? Rigid or Flexible? Removable or non-removable? Complete or Partial?
Example Two blades of a pair of scissors Direct or Indirect? Rigid or Flexible? Removable or non-removable? Complete or Partial?
Do on your own… 2 Lego Blocks Direct or Indirect? Rigid or Flexible? Removable or non-removable? Complete or Partial?
Do on your own… Two pieces of fenceboard Direct or Indirect? Rigid or Flexible? Removable or non-removable? Complete or Partial?
