TECHNOLOGICAL OVERVIEW Advancements and the skilled use of technology increases on a daily basis Everyone As uses technology; no age limit soon as a child learns of technology there is no turning back for them

VIDEO GAMES One of the most widely used technology for children is the use of a gaming system of some sort Video games are almost inevitable for a child to play, and most definitely inevitable that they will at least know about it You can find a video game based on anything these days (eg, movies, wars, and fictional past/futuristic worlds)

POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE? Many adults and parents argue that some of these games are terrible for kids Violence Lack of physical activity (“couch potato”) Waste of time Kills children’s brains Takes away from school attendance or grades

THE TRUTH Although for some, yes it can hinder a child in certain ways The problem here is the negatives always come up first “Video games promote a wide range of cognitive skills” (Metz) These technological skills with the controller can “transfer” to their later professions or career desires/skills

Robotic Surgery An example for this technological skill transfer I find most interesting is Robotic surgery All robotics could be argued here but one of the most important professions in the world is surgery; without it what would we do? Now there is the invention of robotic surgery

WHAT IS IT? HOW DOES IT WORK? The machine is called the “da Vinci Si Surgical Robot” Less invasive of the body; most effective advancement; faster recovery rates The surgeon will sit with a special computer setup, with a magnified SMALL 3 D camera, having a 360 degree view of what is to be operated on; a separate surgeon is at the table assuring precise accuracy From there the surgeon uses hand foot controls, he or she can then control all 4 robotic arms to preform the procedures on the patients

THE TECHNOLOGICAL RELATION Video games can lead to a career such as being a “robotic” surgeon Why? First of all, these two activities use the same part of the brain – The cerebellum This controls coordination and muscular activity As it states previously, both activities require hand-eye coordination and precise muscular movement; thus using the same part of the brain War games for example; one must be precise with their shots to succeed The same goes for robotic surgical procedures; but much more serious

THE BIAS The bias against children playing video games is only right if the gamers themselves make it true There are many uses for these skills subconsciously attained, not only in the medical field, but all around as the tech world continues to advance

SO ARE VIDEO GAMES A “BAD” FORM OF TECHNOLOGY?
