Using Consequences=An end result Items misplaced if not put away (Natural) If do not put blocks away, cannot play with them again. (Logical)
Warning Remind a student when he/she does not follow a rule that their behavior will have consequences. Two parts to this technique -State the misbehavior -Then state the result of the behavior
Time-Out • Moving a child away from others for a period of time • Example of a logical consequence
I-Message • Tells the child how a person feels about his/her behavior in a respectful manner. • Three parts: • Child’s behavior • Your feelings about the behavior • The effects of the behavior “When I see you put down your friends I get sad because you are hurting their feelings. ”
Effective Praise • Acknowledgement of child’s actions or progress. • Makes child feel competent and valued. • Can be displayed nonverbally with a smile
Suggesting • Placing thoughts for consideration into children’s minds • Lead children’s thoughts and feelings in desirable directions • “Kait try this fruit today! It is delicious. ”
Prompting • Need to stop an unacceptable action or start an acceptable one. • Used to prepare children for transitions • Different from suggesting because a response is required. • “What should we do before we have snack? ”
Persuading • Encourage a child to act or behave in a certain way by appealing to their basic wants and needs. • “We are having such fun, Tiffany. Will you join us? ”
Redirecting • Divert or turn attention in a different direction • Distraction is an example of this • (Choose an interesting toy or book to distract the child’s interest away from the parent. )
Modeling • Imitating others both verbally and nonverbally • Use pro social behavior
Listening • Giving a child full attention • Effective when nodding and letting children talk without interruption
Ignoring • Avoid giving a child attention
Encouraging • This helps children believe in themselves. • “You know how it works!” • “I know you can do it!”
