Who are Turks ? ? ? Turks have a long background dating back to the 3 rd millennia BC, when they lived as nomads in the great Chinese steppes and on the Mongolian highlands. Historical written references to the Turks appear in Chinese records of about 200 BC, when Turks liberated themselves from the Chinese autonomy and moved towards the west to establish their own Empires and States mainly within the intersection of 3 continents; Asia, Europe and Africa. Before the foundation of Republic of Turkey, there were 16 Turkish States. The rulers of these States were called mainly Tarkan, Tanhu, Kagan (Kaan), Han (Khan), Yangu, Bey, Shah, Sultan, and so on. Generally the eldest son was appointed as the crown prince. In case the crown princes were too young, their uncles were enthroned until they grew up. The capital city of the ruler was called "Ordu".

The Turkish Republic is the 17 th and the last of the Turkish States. October 29, 1923 is a fateful date in Turkish history. On that date, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the liberator of his country, proclaimed the Republic of Turkey. The new homogeneous nation-state stood in sharp contrast to the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire out of whose ashes it arose. The dynasty and theocratic Ottoman system, with its Sultanate and Caliphate, thus came to an end. Atatürk's Turkey dedicated itself to the sovereignty of the national will - to the creation of, in the President's words, "the state of the people ". Today the term “Turk” commonly refers to citizens of the Turkish Republic and represents a nation rather than an ethnic identity.

Gaziantep At the time, with a population of over 80. 000, Zeugma was one of the largest cities in the world, bigger than Pompeii and Londinium (London) and as big as Athens. This ancient city, founded at Gaziantep, on the shallowest part along the shores of the River Euphrates in 300 B. C. , was conquered by the Romans in the 1 st century B. C. and renamed Zeugma.

The rich tradition of the Turkish cuisine is popular throughout the world. It includes a wide variety of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres known everywhere as “meze”, a wide selection of grilled meats (kebab) seafood, stuffed and wrapped vegetables (dolma), savory pastries (börek), pilav and dishes with olive oil and butter as well as a wide variety of desserts among them Turkish delight, baklava, helva, kadayif, and several puddings.
A good meal naturally ends with fine Turkish Coffee. Yogurt, now popular in the West, has been known to the Turks since ancient times. Turkish cooks are heirs to one of the world’s finest cuisines. The Turks brought a tradition of cooking with them out of Central Asia and discovered new foods and ways to prepare them in Asia Minor. In Turkish cuisine, as in so many other things Turkish, East meets West in a delightful way.
Anatolia was producing wine as early as 4000 BC.

On 23 rd of April 1920, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) was founded in Ankara and after 1927, April 23 was dedicated to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Turkey is the first country to celebrate Children's Day as a national holiday. Every year, on April 23, the country rededicates itself to honoring and cherishing children and the freedom and independence of all people.
Women in Turkey were given the right to vote and be elected to public Office in 1934 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Despite a long-lasting war between the two countries, the Greek Prime Minister Eleutherios Kryikos Venizelos, in a 3 -page letter he wrote in 1934, proposed that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize that year. The Prime Minister expressed his admiration for this great man, asserting that he had paved the way for the proclamation of independence.
This place was believed to be the location where the legendary sailing ship “Argos” of the Argonauts, who were in search of the Golden Fleece, had anchored. Tolerance to other religious beliefs was noteworthy of the Ottoman Turkish rule.
