Technical meeting and networking buffet Mariner Field : a challenging UK heavy oil development Ingolf Soreide & Simone Silcock, Statoil Mariner is a large, offshore heavy oil discovery located in block UK-9/11, south-east of Shetland west of the Beryl Field. Production start is scheduled for the first quarter of 2017. The reservoir development strategy is based on the re-injection of produced water. The production well design includes Electrical Submersible Pumps for artificial lift and inflow control devices to reduce water influx. Sub-surface challenges to be handled include early water breakthrough via the production of heavy oil and the mapping of complex reservoir geometries associated with remobilized Heimdal sands. New seismic data, incorporating the latest acquisition and processing techniques, is emerging and a polymer flooding study has commenced in a bid to maximize the EOR potential of the Mariner field.
