Tech Tips, Info & Useful Links School of Public and International Affairs Fall 2020
Introduction • This brief slide deck provides information about tech tools for fall course preparation. • All faculty who requested a lapel mic and/or Logitech webcam will receive these technologies as orders arrive at SPIA. Webcams are presently on backorder.
Using lapel mics in the classroom • To use a lapel mic in any SPIA classroom, open the podium cabinet and plug it into the 3. 5 mm port (as shown to the right). • Lapel mics are great for dealing with ambient noise without impairing the quality of the wearer’s spoken word. Best practice: repeat questions and answers from students to ensure a good experience for synchronous participants and for users of the uploaded recorded sessions. • In case you need an extension for your lapel mic wire (i. e. , to walk around while teaching, etc. , ) please reach out to the local SPIA-IT Tech to borrow an extension cable. Note: if you walk around, you may move out of range of the webcam. Also: take care with social distancing vis-à-vis you & students.
Switching to and testing a mic on a MAC Step 1: Click the Apple icon present in the top left corner of the screen. A menu will appear as shown in this image: Step 4: Under Sound select the Input tab. Step 5: Highlight Digital In or Line in Step 2: Click System Preferences. Step 3: Under system preferences select Sound either by clicking it or by searching for it in the search text box. Step 6: Speak into your mic and confirm the Input level reacts
Switching to and testing a mic in Windows Step 1: Select Start > Settings Step 2: Select System Step 4: Click on the drop down for Choose your input device Step 5: Select your mic. Step 6: Speak into your mic and confirm the Test your microphone bar reacts Step 3: Select Sound

Platforms for remote learning • A Zoom account can be created upon request at no charge to the end-user. • Kaltura, a part of e. LC, has a downloadable software for screen capturing that also allows for voice & camera recording as part of the visual.
