What is Teamwork? Before we can establish a good team we need to understand Teamwork “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual efforts and accomplishments toward organisational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results” Andrew Carnegie, American industrialist, 1835 -1919
Teamwork Synergy: § The term is used to describe a situation where different entities cooperate advantageously for a final outcome. § Simple defined: The whole is greater than the individual parts. 1 + 1 = 3 If used in a business application it basically means “Teamwork”
Teamwork Development Stages: Bruce Wayne Tuckman, published an article in 1965 called the “Developmental sequence in small groups” and within this article he maintained that there were four progressive phases the group would go through. All were necessary and inevitable, in order for the team to grow, to face up to challenges, to tackle problems, to find solutions, to plan work, and to deliver results. Teamwork Development Stages - Forming: § § § Members behave independently (self-focussed. ). Members are generally motivated. Members are usually on their best behaviour. Low understanding of roles. Team learns about opportunities & challenges. Forming relationships.
Teamwork Development Stages - Storming: § § § Ideas suggested & proposed. Open discussion / challenge / criticism. Member maturities, can add indirect conflicts. Focus on problems / details. Duration dependent on maturity of members. Can be destructive.
Teamwork Development Stages - Norming: § § Team members adjust their behaviour to each other. Team members start to agree on rules and values etc. Motivation increases. Total team agreement can stifle healthy dissent.
Teamwork Development Stages - Performing: § The team functions as a unit as they find ways to get the job done. § No inappropriate conflict or the need for external supervision. § The team members are now competent and autonomous. § Dissent is expected and allowed as long as it is channelled through means acceptable to the team.

Lost at Sea Teamwork You have chartered a yacht with three friends, for the holiday trip of a lifetime across the Atlantic Ocean. Because none of you have any previous sailing experience, you have hired an experienced skipper and two-person crew. Unfortunately in mid Atlantic a fierce fire breaks out in the ships galley and the skipper and crew have been lost whilst trying to fight the blaze. Much of the yacht is destroyed and is slowly sinking. Your location is unclear because vital navigational and radio equipment have been damaged in the fire. Your best estimate is that you are many hundreds of miles from the nearest landfall. You and your friends have managed to save 15 items, undamaged and intact after the fire.
