Main Points • Complexities of Teams • Group Dynamics • Good Guy/ Bad Guy • Performance checklist • Maximizing Benefits And Maximizing Detriments
Complexities of Teams • Human Interaction between two individuals is sometimes difficult. • Conflict between and among team members may present itself.
Group Dynamics • Stages of team development 1. Mutual Acceptance. 2. Communication. 3. Motivation and Productivity. 4. Control and Organization. • The phenomenon of Groupthink • Brainstorming
Good guy/Bad guy • The tactic of good guy / bad guy is particularly helpful when one negotiator on each side has difficulty communicating with one on the other side and the person designated as the good guy is able to reach the counterpart perceived as difficult.
Performance checklist • Using teams in negotiation can often be beneficial. • The more diversity—in terms of personality, style, approach, and perspective—that exists among team members, the more beneficial will be the outcome of using a team. • Techniques of generating and maintaining an effective level of conflict and cohesion in teams include playing devil’s advocate and sharing common goals.
Maximizing benefits and minimizing detriments • In addition to balance in the team, you will need to negotiate with each other, prepare together, and share information and views with each other. • Sometimes teams are used for no purpose other than to out-number and intimidate the other side. This is an aggressive and competitive approach.
The Summary • Team negotiation: Individuals come in a group for a purpose of solving a problem or creating a new idea leading to an agreement and trying to avoid arguments. • Complexities of teams: conflict can take place among team members. • Group dynamics: mutual acceptance plays the significant role, however, control, motivation, and organizing is the leaders responsibility. • Good guy/ bad guy tactic: taking the higher authority strategy to he next level.
• Diversity: diversity leads to success in teams and high performance. • Maximizing benefits and minimizing detriments: hopefully team negotiation leads to agreements.
