Team and Team Work Is a group of people with a common, collective goal is called team. n Team work is the cumulative actions of the team during each member of the team subordinates his individual interests and opinions to fulfill the goals of the groups. n
Y teams (Reasons for teams) Two or more heads are better than one n The whole is greater than the sum of its part n People in teams get to know each other, build trust, and as a result want to help others n Team work promotes better communication n Fair distribution of responsibility and authority exists n
Types of teams n Process improvement teams Repairs operations of the process n Teams activities are limited to the work unit n Six to ten members in each team n These teams are just for temporary basis. n n Cross-functional teams The represent different functional areas ( marketing, accounting, production, quality and human recourses) n Such teams have to serve a particular product line, service activity, or a particular customer n
n Natural work teams: n n It is composed of all the members of work unit. Manager is apart of team and the projects to be improved are selected by management Self directed/ Self-managed: They are the extension of natural work teams without the supervisor n Here team meets daily to plan their activities and decisions usually by consensus n There responsibilities include hiring/firing, performance evaluation, customer relations, suppliers relations, rewards and training. n

Team leaders n n n They ensures the smooth and effective operations of team They ensures that all members participate during the meeting and use positive interpersonal behavior They serves as contact point between the team and the sponsor They assure timely completion of assignments Prepare the meeting agenda, time, date and location
Facilitator The are not the members of the team but…. n Support the leader in facilitating the team in start n Does not perform activities that the team can do n Provides feedback to the team concerning the effectiveness of the team process. n
Team recorder n n They are selected by the leader and rotated on a periodic basis. Documents the main ideas of the team’s discussion, the issues raised, decisions made and future agenda items. Presents the documents for teams to review during the meeting and distributes them as minutes after the meeting in a timely manner Participate as a team member.
Time Keeper They are selected by the leader and rotated on a periodic basis n Monitors the time to ensure that the team maintains the schedule as determined by the agenda. n Participate as a team member n
Team member n n n n They are selected by the leader, sponsor or quality council. Contributes best, without reservation, by actively participating in meetings and sharing knowledge, expertise, ideas and information Respect other people’s contribution Listen carefully and asks questions Trust, support, and has genuine concern for others Understands and is committed to team objectives Encourage feedback on own behavior Give honest, sincere appreciation
Stages of team development
Five stages of team development n Forming: n n Storming: n n 3 rd stage where members begins to work together Emotional conflicts are reduced Performing: n n 2 nd stage is difficult stage. This is also called conflicting stage Norming: n n 1 st stage is formation stage where they know about each other. 4 th stage where the team members have settled their responsibility and expectations Adjourning : n Final stage is for the temporary teams after completing the task they adjourn.
