Why use model texts?
Basic Lesson Plan � Students read model text for gist � Teacher gives or elicits analysis framework (see next slide) � Students analyse text � Whole class discuss text and draw out important features � (Optional: Students do a task to focus on a particular language point from the text) � Students plan and write a similar text
CLOSE Analysis Framework �Content: what content is appropriate for this text type? �Layout: what layout is conventional for this text type? �Organisation: what is a logical organisation for what needs to be said? �Style: what style is appropriate for this text type? �Expressions: what words or phrases can I collect from this text?
Workshop Task 1 Analyse �Content: What information is included? What is NOT included? �Layout: Is there a title? Are there any special features, like lists, greetings, subheadings, etc. ? �Organisation: How many paragraphs are there? What kind of information is in each paragraph? �Style: Is it formal? Informal? Personal? Impersonal? Persuasive? Descriptive? Concise? �Expressions: Are there any useful words or phrases?

Workshop Task 2 Select & Adapt � Choose your task: informal letters or reviews of tourist attractions. � Which text would you select as a model? Why? � Would you adapt it at all? Why? How? Fast finishers: - Analyse the text using the CLOSE framework: what features would you draw attention to? - What follow-up writing task would you set your students?

Workshop Task 3 Designing a Language Focus Task � Go back to one of the texts that you chose to use as a model. � What language focus tasks could you do with it? � How would you create this task? (e. g. cut and paste in Word, cut up a photocopy of the text, blank out certain words etc. ) Fast finishers: You may like to compare your ideas with another group!
