Service Learning Project Idea #1 Question: How can you improve upon the availability or access of foods that are both good for producers and consumers in your community? Resource: Food Desert Locator Use the Locator to determine if areas near you include large numbers of low-income communities without reliable access to nutritious foods. Project: Students will survey peers, family members, and community members, asking them questions about how availability of nutritious foods could be improved in your community. Students will present their findings to local grocery store managers and owners, urging them to make these foods available. Students may also choose to publish their results in a local newspaper where people can read what is important to the community at large.
Service Learning Project Idea #2 Question: How can we cultivate a greater connection with raw foods and the process of growing food? Resource: Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Project: Students will plan a school garden, either to serve as a demonstration garden or to grow food for community members in need. Student may pair up with a local pantry to distribute the food produced. Students may also need to conduct some research prior to starting their garden.
Project Based Learning Students will develop a teaching module to educate younger students about where and how their food is produced. Students develop a teaching module to explain to young students (1 st grade) about where their food comes from. This should be appropriate for 2 to 3 hours of instruction. Student groups will need to write out their lesson plans and prepare to deliver teach the content to young learners. Students will partner with a nearby elementary school to share their teaching unit with their target audience (1 st graders). Each student group can teach their module to a small group of young students.
